Product Overview & How it started

Declutta app is a digital application that is focused on solving the problem of environmental waste and enhance the environmental sustainability goals and agenda through an e-coomerce platform where people can buy and sell or donate items they no longer find useful.

On the Declutta app, you can list items you are no longer using either for sale, sell and use the proceeds for charity, or even list the item for free and anyone who’s interested in it could claim the item.

Once i got the commission to design this beautiful idea, a meeting was set up between myself and the stakeholders, the project manager, developer, and sponsor for the project. During this meeting, the concept, objectives and scope of the project was discussed thoroughly, we brainstormed ideas that could make the application a better and industry standard solution. I recieved the project brief and requirements from Confidence Uzodinma who is the project head, and then went ahead to design a simple logo for the product idea, then went into researchphase fully

Research Phase

This study will focus on understanding user behaviors, preferences, and pain points related to selling and buying second-hand goods. Additionally, it aims to explore existing competitor applications in the market to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement. Through thorough research and analysis, this study intends to deliver insights that will inform the development of a user-centric and environmentally responsible platform.

The first step i took was to download some competitor applications like “Refree” and “Olio app” and i went through them extensively to see their user flows and how they work.

I also went to Trust pilot to see how satisfied their customers are with the service and their interaction with the product. I then did some comparative study to see the loop holes and how i can design a better performing solution.

User Personas

Based on our original research goals, we have successfully gained an understanding of our potential users and have used these insights to create the personas. Through this process, we have identified several problems, which we view as opportunities to develop a superior solution compared to our competitors.

Issues identified include:

1. Bad Functionality: Users have reported significant complaints regarding the app's malfunction, discriminatory behavior by staff, poor customer service, and abrupt removal from the app without prior notice. Our primary focus is to ensure that the design of our app prioritizes seamless operation throughout all user interactions.

2. Lack of Trust in the Company: Accusations of fraud, greed, and allegations of certain company members benefiting personally from users' items have arisen. The app has been described as "another avenue for the rich to get free food." To address this, we are committed to building a more automated system that eliminates the need for items to pass directly through us.

3. Outdated Systems: Feedback highlighted concerns about antiquated systems and their apparent resistance to embracing a fully digital, automated model. This resistance was seen as a factor contributing to human elements such as greed, which risked tarnishing the company's reputation and eroding trust with users.

Next step i took was to pick my pen and paper to start sketching concepts and layouts for the screens. I prefer this method because writing comes more natural to me and there’s usually no creativity lag when i’m documenting my design ideas through this method.

The idea of this stage is to let my creativity flow unhinged and while i might be familiar with other tools like sketch, I've been using the pen and paper for over two decades so it definitely comes more naturally, which is exactly what i need for this phase of design.

Testing (A/B Testing)

Testing (A/B Testing)

There was a testing done between two samples of the CARD CHECKOUT SCREENS. This testing was carried out amongst the wider members of the team of the project and potential users of the product. The total sample size for this testing was 18 people and the second screen(to the right) was preferred because it was reported to feel easier to use, most likely because it has less items on it.

We therefore went ahead to implement the screen to the right.

A/b testing was also done for a number of other screens in different times during the design process as we made iterations and created options so only the best layouts and designs are finally implemented.
